Aalakaalam

“Aalakaalam” is an upcoming 2024 Tamil social drama film, directed, written, and produced by Jaya Krishnamoorthy under the banner of Shree Jai Productions. The lead roles of the film are played by Easwari Rao, Jaya Krishnamoorthy, Chandini Tamilarasan, and Thangadurai. The movie has a strong message regarding the vices of alcoholism and how it damages families.

The movie is inspired by “Jai” (Jaya Krishnamoorthy), an industrious and honest young guy who was raised by his single parent, “Yashoda” (Easwari Rao). Having lost her husband to alcoholism, Yashoda is adamant that she will not let the same thing happen to Jai. She teaches him strong principles to make sure that he stays on track with his studies and steer clear of bad company. Jai excels academically and joins a prestigious college, where he meets “Tamizh” (Chandini Tamilarasan), a wealthy and independent girl. She falls for Jai’s honesty and discipline, and soon, they start a relationship.

And then there is Rajesh, Tamizh's classmate who envies her and likes her and is annoyed with her for liking Jai.Determined to spoil the name of Jai, Rajesh deceives him into drinking alcohol. Jai resists initially, but eventually finds himself caught in alcohol's trap. 

Jai's drinking spirals terribly out of control; while Tamizh's enraged family disowns her, she is left with no option of going anywhere else. Jai confesses his guilt and secretly marries Tamizh, but is too ashamed to confess it before mother. 

While Jai puts on a facade in front of the whole world regarding his addiction and its aftermath, the film projects in simple terms not just how alcoholism destroys relationships and studies, but also decimates family ties. Director Jaya Krishnamoorthy vividly portrays how a single ill-fated decision devastates lives and highlights the point that addiction starts as happiness but gradually becomes a lethal trap.

With a powerful message and emotional content, “Aalakaalam” is a film one should watch that teaches one about the ruthless reality of alcoholism.
