“Aegan” (2008) by Raju Sundaram is an action thriller film. The film features Ajith Kumar and Nayanthara in lead roles. The official synopsis reads, In this gritty crime drama, CB-CID officer Shiva goes undercover on a college campus for a covert mission and unwittingly reconnects with his estranged family.

Shiva’s job, of course, is to track down this rogue terrorist scientist, John Chinnappa, before he carries out his next big attack. The only man who can really put him away is ex-gangster General Ram Prasad. To save Ram Prasad’s daughter, Pooja, and figure out Ram’s whereabouts, Shiva enters her college in Ooty under the cover of a fellow student. Shiva goes undercover to blend in and secretly complete his mission. In college, he encounters Narain, Pooja’s best friend, and chemistry teacher Mallika, whom he falls in love with. As things start to unfold, Shiva becomes personally invested when he discovers Narain is his half-brother and Mallika is his former teacher, now love interest.

Tension escalates when Pooja is abducted by John’s goons. Shiva brings her to safety, and she is joyously reunited with Narain after a long time apart. With the help of a young gangster, Ram Prasad surfaces later, and Shiva ultimately finds and confronts John Chinnappa. In a climactic showdown, Shiva murders John and finally achieves his violent mission. As he walks, not only does he welcome safe passage for all spiritual beings, but he also starts to rebuild his splintered family connections and wins the tolerance of his father’s first wife and his little brother.

“Aegan” mixes high-octane action with raw emotional family drama. Ajith Kumar does a commendable job, bringing physicality to the hard-nosed cop with a heart. Nayanthara is the fiercest of charms, and the chemistry between her, as seasoned bigshot Mookuthi Amman, and Jayaram, as a comic-book-esque villain, is magnetic. Aegan is an enjoyable action flick with touches of family emotion and campus merriment.
