"Alangu" is a 2024 Tamil action thriller film directed by S. P. Shakthivel. The movie features Gunanidhi, Kaali Venkat, Chemban Vinod, and Appani Sarath. The movie is based on true events and follows the story of a young tribal boy trapped in a fatal pursuit.
"Dharman" (Gunanidhi), a down-to-earth and kind-hearted tribal boy, along with his friends and his dog, Kaali, travels from Tamil Nadu to Kerala to fulfill his mother's last wish. But their peaceful journey turns into a nightmarish experience when "Augustine" (Chemban Vinod), a cunning politician, orders all the dogs in the area to be killed when his daughter is attacked by one. Dharman and friends won't leave Kaali behind, placing them squarely at loggerheads with Augustine's burly goon, "Philip" (Appani Sarath).
As Dharman and friends try to escape, they are chased along the dense Kerala forests. Their survival skills are put to the test in the high-speed chase as Philip's gang follows them every step of the way. Dharman, the once innocent boy, now must protect his friends and his faithful dog.
The film strikes a perfect balance between action and emotion and makes the individuals relate to the bond between Dharman and Kaali. Gunanidhi does a good job and makes the protagonist's struggles look real. The cat-and-mouse game between Philip's gang and Dharman's gang is replete with suspenseful moments that keep the viewers in suspense.
Unlike typical action films, "Alangu" avoids melodrama and predictable cliches. It rather touches upon the themes of violence, vengeance, and survival in a very subtle manner using quiet narration. Symbolic moments, like an act of one character taking painkillers upon the amputation of his arm so that he can take his revenge, lend depth to the story.
With its captivating screenplay, stunning visuals, and depth of emotion, Alangu is a thrilling one that keeps audiences hooked right until the end.
