"Alti" (2020) is a Tamil action drama directed and written by M.J. Hussain, featuring Manish Jith, Marimuthu, and Robert Master. The movie is based in the middle of Chennai and revolves around three best friends: Anbu, Yasif, and Sendrayan, who are fighting to earn a living. Disillusioned with their poor living conditions and the absence of good job opportunities, they progressively descend into lives of petty crimes, robbing mobile phone owners and selling hot phones for a quick buck. This hustle ends up becoming a full-time occupation over time.

Their fate changes when, in ignorance, they appropriate a phone containing crucial video footage documenting the assassination of a high-profile politician's son. The video captures the direct involvement of key political players, making the machine a deadly piece of evidence. Once the trio becomes aware of what they hold, it's too late for them to exit the police, as well as the goons hired by the MLA, who pursue them to capture the phone and destroy all evidence of the crime.

What ensues is a thrilling cat-and-mouse game as the friends struggle to escape. They turn to a retired cop who initially declines but then agrees to help after discovering the truth. Amidst increasing threats, betrayals, and a time bomb, the three friends decide to save their lives or do the right thing and expose the tainted system. Ultimately, even after losing one of their own, the other two are able to leak the video to the media and get the perpetrators punished.

"Alti" tries to mix action and drama with a social lesson on how poverty can drive even the innocent into crime. Although the plot has potential, uneven pacing, poorly developed characters, and clichéd dialogue bring down the film. Despite its shortcomings, it engages some essential themes of justice, loyalty, and redemption.
