Amarkalam

“Amarkalam” (1999) is a Tamil cinema romantic action film by Saran. It featured artists like Ajith Kumar, Shalini and Raghuvaran. The film follows Vasu, a crook who is hired by a former gang leader to hold the commissioner's daughter, Mohana, captive for two days in a scheme to disgrace her family. During her captivity, Mohana unexpectedly falls in love with Vasu, but he rejects her feelings.

Vasu largely lives inside a cinema theatre owned by Aarumugam and has been extremely traumatized, spending his days drinking, fighting and sleeping. After Vasu’s friend, Thilak, loses a cycle race to Mohana, an arm wrestling match between Vasu and Mohana, whose family enjoys close ties with the police, leads to a beating administered to Vasu. After storming into the theatre, Tulasi Das, a former mafia boss who hates Mohana's father, Birla Bose, orders Vasu to flee with Mohana. Through the song "Satham Illatha," Vasu shares his difficult background, which makes Mohana fall in love with him.

When Tulasi finds out that Mohana loves her, she orders Vasu to act as if he loves her. At first, it is purely a charade, but over time, as both Vasu and Mohana learn more about one another, Vasu finds himself truly falling for Mohana. Once Tulasi learns that Mohana is his daughter, he orders Vasu to cut the relationship. When Vasu flatly refuses, this brings Vasu into conflict with Tulasi, and after learning Vasu’s true feelings, Mohana confronts Vasu and breaks up with him. Heartbroken, Vasu joins another gang, but Mohana later comes to know the reason for his sorrowful childhood. Vasu eventually shows his true love during a war between cops and criminals, and after some action-packed sequences, he is reunited with Mohana.

“Amarkalam” is a gritty, emotional, romantic action-drama that explores the world of love, redemption and self-destructive inner conflict. Set against a gritty Detroit backdrop, the film takes us into the inner world of a darkened soul on the run from himself, as he experiences the life-changing effects of finding purpose through the redemptive powers of unexpected love.
