Anantha Poongatre

“Anantha Poongatre” (1999) is a romantic number from the film Mugavaree starring Ajith Kumar, Meena and Karthik (cameo appearance). The story chronicles the life of Jeeva as he starts a love journey with Meena, a widow who has a son of her own, and starts respecting her even more when he gets to know her past. When her father kidnaps Meena’s son to blackmail him, he is compelled to marry Divya instead.

Meenatchi, a widow, lives with her son, Nandu. Its member Jeeva, who has been quietly in love with her for four years, heads A-to-Z. While Divya attempts to learn more about Jeeva for her suitor, she falls for him herself. When she confronts him, Jeeva admits he loves Meenatchi, leading to unexpected revelations about Meenatchi's past.

In a haunting flashback, we learn that Meenatchi was one of Haridas’s music students, and he was murdered when misunderstandings related to her father’s grievance led to mob violence. Later on, Meenatchi makes a bold decision to spend the rest of her life as a widow and nurtures Haridas’s illegitimate son, Nandu. On the same day, Jeeva expresses his intention to marry Meenatchi.

On that same day, Jeeva and his parents were about to meet Meenatchi as a potential bride. When Jeeva gets to witness all these scenes unfold right before his eyes, he feels a great respect towards her bravery. Though his parents try to stop it, he promises Meenatchi’s father that he will convince her to come around and that he will accept her as his bride. Meenatchi’s world is shaken when Divya’s father, an ardent believer of love marriage, abducts Nandu and summons Jeeva to marry Divya. Jeeva, naturally, agrees, and this is where things are ramped up in the climax.

“Anantha Poongatre” is a powerful lyrical romance, intertwining love, sacrifice and emotional strength with a gripping story. Brimming with richly drawn characters and a lovely sense of sentiment, it observes out-of-the-ordinary relationships and ethical quandaries with nuance and depth.
