“Araathu” is a 2019 Tamil-language action drama penned, co-produced, and directed by Robert Master, who is also playing the lead role. The movie features Junior MGR Ramachandran, Neelima, and Mahendran and is shot on location in the rural Tamil Nadu heartland, where power, politics, and private revenge intersect.
The movie is based on a truthful and courageous man called "Sundarapandian" (acted by Robert Master), who takes up the role of the voice of justice in a violent and corrupting village. A good and brave man, Sundarapandian gains the respect of the villagers. But his fearless approach makes him a target for the fear-mongering and manipulative local thug and political leader “Periyasamy” (played by Mahendran).
As Sundarapandian goes on to confront the corrupt system, he befriends a young educated man named “Karthik” (Junior MGR Ramachandran), who comes back to his village with hopes of reform. They begin to awaken the villagers, enabling them to stand up for themselves. Sundarapandian finds emotional solace in “Anjali” (Neelima), a school teacher who is convinced of his cause.
Things take a turn for the worse when Periyasamy turns on Sundarapandian's family and unleashes a series of brutal attacks to silence him. But Sundarapandian does not back down, instead taking revenge even harder, mobilising the villagers. In the ultimate confrontation, Sundarapandian takes on Periyasamy in a gripping battle that ends with the downfall of the villain. Justice is finally restored, and the village enters a new era free from terror.
The movie is appreciated for its raw energy, rural location, and powerful message against injustice. Though the direction and performances are received differently, Robert Master's intense on-screen presence and the action sequences of the movie attract fans of mass heroes. “Araathu” is a classic rural action drama with a boisterous but genuine voice for justice.
