“Asvins” is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language psychological horror film written and directed by Tarun Teja, who makes his directorial debut. It is produced by Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and features Vasanth Ravi and Vimala Raman, with Muralidaran and Saraswathi Menon playing supporting roles.
The tale begins with a mystical folk legend in the past, in which a young boy is rescued by the divine twin deities Ashwini Kumars. He is blessed with a boon that he will not die except of natural causes. This myth leads to a haunting tale which unfolds centuries later.
In current times, five Indian YouTubers, namely “Arjun” (Vasanth Ravi), “Ritu” (Saraswathi Menon), “Grace,” “Varun” (Muralidaran), and “Rahul” (Udhayadeep), go to London to shoot content within an old mansion. The mansion was once owned by “Aarthi Rajagopal” (Vimala Raman), a renowned archaeologist who had expertise in black rituals and supernatural facts. They do not know that their discovery will unleash an ancient evil entity that has been imprisoned for more than 1500 years.
As they start making the film, all of them start facing dreaded paranormal experiences. Unusual voice, hallucination, and body torture rock the group as a distinction between real and unreal falters. Arjun is tormented with visions and tips from the past and discovers what lies behind the demonic spirit as well as the means to silence it. It becomes a suspenseful race as he tries to save his friends from being overrun by the horror.
“Asvins” introduces us to familiar horror tropes, an abandoned dwelling, nosy YouTubers, and a wrathful ghost: but what makes it different is its mythological history and psychological complexity. The second half delves into some interesting concepts, though the story doesn't necessarily remain consistent. The movie, however, provides an original interpretation that horror fans might find interesting enough to watch.
