Binodini, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a simple girl who loses her ailing husband and goes back to her village. After a few days, Binodini sees her aunt and calls out to her. Her aunt lets her live with her and her son Mahendra. When Mahendra sees Binodini, he realizes that he had seen her picture a few years back for marriage but refused her. He is surprised at how beautiful she has turned out. However Mahendra is married and he is busy finding opportunities to get intimate with his wife.
This doesn’t last for long, soon Binodini and Mahendra become close and start having an affair. His wife who is pregnant leaves for Kashi. Meanwhile Binodini loses interest in Mahendra as he is self-obsessed. She meanwhile begs Behari to marry her but he refuses. After a lot of refusal finally Behari agrees to marry her. On the wedding day, Binodini, mysteriously disappears leaving a letter that will change the course of things forever.
The movie is directed by Rituparno Ghosh and produced by Shrikant Mohta and Mahendra Soni. The music is composed by Debojyoti Mishra.
