Coolie (2025) is a Tamil action thriller directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures. The movie features Rajinikanth as the main character, supported by a cast including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram and Soubin Shahir. Anirudh Ravichander’s music is a mix of hard-hitting action, nods to the past, and tense drama. The story is about a smuggler trying to find redemption through revenge.
The plot centres on Deva, played by Rajinikanth, who started as a strong coolie union leader before becoming a smuggler. He’s haunted by the death of a close friend and double-crossed by people he thought he could depend on. Deva decides to make a comeback and fight the gold smuggling mafia. He uses his old contacts and methods to put his gang back together. Now, they use special tech hidden in old golden watches to manage the illegal trade. Deva isn't just looking to recover what he lost; he's out for revenge on the people who destroyed his life.
With the stakes being raised, Deva confronts larger enemies, Simon (Nagarjuna) and several crime lords looking to take over, as well as facing betrayals in his ranks away from Simon, that will test his very fabric to handle and lead him into violent riots. Besides the crazy action, the movie also looks at Deva’s relationships with his crew, his inner struggles, and his strong will. The story slowly builds to a big face-off where loyalty, power, and justice all clash in a way that’s typical of Rajinikanth's movies.
Coolie hit theatres worldwide on August 14, 2025, and quickly became a huge success. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s cool directing style, filled with scenes meant to wow the audience and references to Rajinikanth's past films, keeps viewers interested. Anirudh's thrilling music and songs just made every element feel larger than life and more energetic.
