“Dheena” (2001) by AR Murugadoss was an action entertainer with Ajith Kumar Suresh Gopi and Laila. The film tells the story of Dheena, a right-hand man to a gangster who finds out that his brother has fallen in love with the gangster’s sister. The movie opens with police arresting Aathikesavan’s gang for a liquor store arson, prompting Aathi to send his adopted bro, Dheena, to deal with the witnesses. This leads to Dheena seriously injuring Minister Malarvannan. During this time, Dheena meets and falls in love with Chitra, who tolerates his rowdy lifestyle when she sees his moral character. Dheena fights Ashok (Vignesh), who has been harassing his sister, Shanthi, but later learns that Ashok is Chitra’s brother. Though Ashok has deeply fallen for Shanthi, Aathi does not approve, and the two lovers try to get married in secret. Tragically, Shanthi is injured in an accident and asks Dheena to protect Ashok’s family before she dies.
Aathi, enraged at his sister’s murder, egging on Dheena to murder Ashok’s family, Dheena resists and refuses, which creates a rift between the brothers. To protect them, Dheena moves in with Chitra’s family. Aathi is eventually imprisoned, but upon his release, he plots to take revenge on Dheena and Chitra’s family. Malarvannan plots to take out Dheena but accidentally attacks Chitra. Aathi discovers his mistake about Shanthi’s love for Ashok and they reconcile to defeat Malarvannan together. In the conclusion, Aathi admits the truth that Dheena is his brother, bringing the family together.
