“Election” is a 2024 Tamil political thriller film directed by Thamizh and produced under Reel Good Films. Vijay Kumar, Preethi Asrani, and Richa Joshi are the lead actors in the movie.
The movie revolves around “Nadarasan” (Vijay Kumar), who is not political but gets driven into the local body election after his father gets humiliated in public. What begins as a fight for dignity becomes a fight for survival, altering the fate of him and his family members for good.
Director Thamizh, who debuted with a hard-hitting Seththumaan, takes a different route with Election, blending realistic political drama with some commercial elements. The film delves into the violent and corrupt world of regional politics, where violence, treachery, and power are the rule. Although the film has strong themes, the slow start and excessive dialogue in the initial scenes test the patience of the audience.
One of the film's strongest points is the action sequences choreographed by Stunner Sam. The action sequences are gritty and powerful, adding meat to the story rather than being forced. But Govind Vasantha's background score sometimes overpowers the scenes, diminishing the emotional depth of some scenes.
Vijay Kumar is also suitable for the role of Nadarasan, as he provides the appropriate amount of intensity and vulnerability. His character takes time to pick up steam, though. Of the female leads, Preethi Asrani has better chemistry with Vijay Kumar than Richa Joshi, who has minimal screen space and depth. Even Preethi’s character, Hema, feels underdeveloped, with a particular scene about her expectations in a relationship coming off as neither romantic nor empowering.
Despite its problems with pacing and character development, “Election” remains engrossing thanks to its suspenseful second half and politically biting themes. It is perhaps not as real as Seththumaan, but it portrays the harsh realities of street politics convincingly enough to be well worth watching for political drama buffs.
