Freedom is an Indian Tamil-language action drama film written and directed by Sathyasiva, and produced by Pandiyan Parasuraman under the banner Vijaya Ganapathy's Pictures. Directed by G. Arvindraj, with music by Ghibran Vaibodha, the film features M. Sasikumar and Lijomol Jose as the leads. Based on actual events, Freedom takes a brazen leap forward by highlighting a sorrowful, relatively unknown event in Tamil history that resonates with political and emotional gravity on screen.
Set against the backdrop of the early 1990s, the film follows the story of a group of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees fleeing civil war who become wrongfully imprisoned at Vellore Fort following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. One of those imprisoned is Maaran, a refugee – a group that the establishment had imagined suspect rather than a victim. Accompanying him in wrongful incarceration is his pregnant wife Selvi, who is portrayed as the powerless plight of those we need narratives of for representation. Stripped of humanity, tortured, and discriminated against, the prisoners eventually plan a successful escape in 1995 by tunnelling out of the fort.
M. Sasikumar played the resolute and stoic Maaran, while Lijomol Jose played Selvi, and she courageously presented her character’s vulnerabilities. Aided by a cast that included Sudev Nair, Malavika Avinash, Bose Venkat, and Ramesh Khanna, the supporting players added emotional colour and imbued their roles with good humour when appropriate. Together they provided depictions of varying shades of human nature: cruelty, compassion, betrayal and hope.
The film was originally scheduled to be released in July 2024, but has been postponed due to related delays in government clearance due to its politically-charged content. When it is released, Freedom should be a powerful emotional experience that forces audiences to reflect on Justice and the ideas of perseverance and lost promises of the past.
