Get Set Baby

“Get Set Baby” (2025) is a Malayalam-language comedy-drama, directed by Vinay Govind, and starring Unni Mukundan, Nikhila Vimal, and Chemban Vinod Jose.


The central narrative follows the life and work of a male gynaecologist and IVF specialist, Dr Arjun Balakrishnan who was, as he says, the only man in his medical college class. Now, in an increasingly female-dominated field, he faces scepticism and bias from patients who will not see a male gynaecologist. His skill and sensitivity quickly start to sway his naysayers, earning him a reputation as the state’s top physician.

As his career continues a meteoric rise, his newfound big-headedness grows, threatening the most important personal and professional relationships in its wake. While Arjun begins his journey as an idealistic, caring, talented physician, the ambition that drives him soon overwhelms his empathy, transforming him into a man who cares more about notoriety and awards than the wellbeing of his patients. This change happens quickly and a bit haphazardly onscreen, which makes it more difficult for viewers to remain emotionally engaged with his arc, even as the film uses comedy to navigate his unexpectedly vibrant romantic and personal life.

The film’s fundamental problem is the scattershot storytelling. This makes his refusal to accept that he is infertile, an ironic and empty plot point since he’s a fertility doctor, the crux of the series. This premise is kept at arms-length and never brings a satisfying emotional or thematic resolution. Unfortunately, in the end, Get Set Baby stumbles at the finish line due to this lack of depth and a main character whose growth doesn’t come across as fully realized but rather sudden.
