"Gnanaserukku" (2018) by Dharani Rajendran is a profound Tamil action-drama concerning the life of an aged painter (acted by late Veera Santhanam), who spent years working to shape his personality and ethics using his art pieces. The painter resides in a humble home filled with incomplete paintings and clay statues and is less renowned to the public. Even in declining health and loneliness of spirit, he sets about creating a grand, ultimate sculpture, one that he believes will sum up human suffering, defiance, and mercy.

While working on his masterpiece, flashbacks show his younger years with political activism, student demonstrations, and confrontation with institutional repression. His life was marked by personal tragedy and an abiding passion for social justice. Through his work, he had always tried to give voice to the voiceless. But today, he is confronted with indifference by the media, by his neighbours, and even by former allies who have now shed their ideals. When a young documentary filmmaker visits him with the goal of capturing lost artists, their conversations reveal the artist's internal turmoil: Did he have a purpose? Will anyone ever see his final piece?

He continues to sculpt despite his poverty and growing illness, physically pouring his blood, sweat, and tears into the piece. When he is almost finished, a local politician shows up with an offer to destroy the property for a shopping complex. Several students and art enthusiasts muster in protest. Moments before the destruction begins, the artist himself passes away, holding one of his sculptures. The protest catches fire online, and the artist's last masterpiece becomes a countrywide icon of defiance.

"Gnanaserukku" is a soul-stirring homage to the late Veera Santhanam, whose powerful performance lends the film its heart. With a meditative pace and an emotional core, the film delves into themes of legacy, artistic purpose, and humanism. It is a must-watch for those who look for meaning beyond mainstream cinema.
