Director I. V. Sasi's 1980 thriller action picture, "Guru" features Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, R. Muthuraman and M. N. Mambiar. The movie tracks an esteemed benefactor who secretly lives a double life as a dreaded vigilante. When his passionate relationship unexpectedly coincides with a secret from his past, he starts to unravel, and is compelled to face long-buried secrets with terrible repercussions.

In pre-independent India, Raghu, a courageous freedom fighter, is disinherited by his affluent father and is thought killed while escaping the police. Years later, a nasty landlord tries to attack his wife. She is murdered. In a fit of rage, their small son shoots the landlord and flees. Ashok, a well-known philanthropist who runs "Parvathi Nilayam," a home for orphaned children named for his mother, rises to become the kid. Unbeknownst to the rest of the world, Ashok also lives a secret life as "Guru," a shadowy robber stealing to support the shelter. Only Mahesh, his trusted friend, understands the reality.

Ashok's grandfather, meanwhile, oblivious of Ashok's identity, raises an impostor named Ramesh as his son. Ramesh gets entangled in a gang commanded by a one-armed criminal. As Guru, Ashok engages this gang while also falling in love with Sujatha, a nice lady who is the niece of a senior police officer. Later, Ashok learns that the landlord he murdered as a young man was Sujatha's father. Shattered, he separates himself from her without saying anything. Ashok gets ready to vanish as he organises one last robbery to guarantee the shelter's future. In the end, truth, love, and redemption collide as his fate unfolds.

Through the life of a guy conflicted between his admirable public persona, and a secret life motivated by past trauma, "Guru" investigates issues of identity, justice and sacrifice. With powerful performances and dramatic tension, the story gradually builds toward a poignant climax that leaves a lasting emotional impact.
