"Harkara" is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language historical drama film directed and written by Ram Arun Castro. Produced under Kalorful Beta Movement banner, the film features Ram Arun Castro and Kaali Venkat in prominent roles. Based on a remote mountain village, the film traces the life and plight of a postman suspended between history and the current era.
The story is set in the mountain village of Khilmalai, near Bodi, where "Kali" (Kaali Venkat), a disinclined postman, is posted. The village has no roads, no cell phone connectivity, and no other ways of movement except jeeps or mules. Sick of the remoteness and the endless grumbling of the villagers, Kali longs for a transfer. His work is a drudgery, and he is looking to get out of it at the earliest opportunity.
Things take a turn when Kali encounters a stranger on one of his delivery rounds, who narrates the tale of "Matheswaran" (Ram Arun Castro), a postman from the British era who used to work in the same area. Matheswaran, viewed by the locals as a guardian and even worshipped as a family god, has a history that begins to parallel Kali's present. We see the film transition to the past and learn that Matheswaran sacrificed his life for the people and, in the process, potentially hid official paperwork in order to protect the village. Throughout this learning process, Kali himself is slowly beginning to change concerning his views about the village, his job, and the people there.
"Harkara" is an emotional attempt to bridge the past with today's struggle. Kaali Venkat is great and often funny as a man stuck between obligation, and dissatisfaction. Although the film is imperfect: e.g., the poor establishment of Matheswaran's character and inaccuracies of history, it does succeed in developing an emotional attachment. The power of the movie is its setting, unusual concept, and eternal theme of sacrifice and service.
