Directed by Mani Ratnam, “Iruvar” is a political drama film, released in 1997 in Tamil cinema. Stars Mohanlal, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Raj and Revathi. The fictional film follows Anandan, a down-on-his-luck actor who has a tight connection to a writer active in a leftist political organization. The true test of their relationship comes when Anandan is chosen to be the party’s candidate in an upcoming contested election, raising tensions and leading to mistrust.

In the late 1940s, Anandan, a young man with a dream to be an actor, finds it almost impossible to find work in Madras, but finds success at the behest of Tamizhselvan, a poet who introduces him to a political party. Anandan marries Pushpavalli, upon the loss of a major lead role, followed by personal tragedy, gains success once more to become a sensation in the Tamil cinema, marrying actress Ramani. When pressed to challenge elections, Anandan gets gunned down while on campaign in documentary footage, but his party emerges victorious.

When Tamizhselvan is appointed chief minister, Anandan attempts to end his plays, with aspirations for a ministerial berth as well, but he is unwilling to quit the theatre. He carries on an often deliriously comic but deeply ambivalent relationship with his co-star Kalpana, who finally gives him the heave-ho. After Anandan ascends to power, his incompetence as a ruler soon drives him into war with Tamizhselvan, whom he mutinously drives from his kingdom. Anandan’s life comes to a tragic close with Kalpana’s death and his ivy, leaving Tamizhselvan to grieve him.

"Iruvar,” about the intoxicating power of cinema, the nature of friendship and the seductive lure of ideology. Thick with symbolism and heavy with historical resonance, the movie portrays both the intoxicating climb of ambition and the high price of often brutal power. Infusing each frame with deeply human elements, insightful artistry and electrifying editing, the film dives deep into the personal and political clashes that have shaped and separated an era. An earnest, incisive, artful meditation on the nature of loyalty, rivalry, and time.
