Directed by R. Sundarrajan, “Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen” is a classic romantic film from Tamil Cinema, released in 1997. Stars Vijay, Dimple, Sundarrajan and Jaishankar. The story begins with a privileged young man, Kannan, who falls in love with Manimekalai after hearing her sing in a temple. When his efforts to befriend her backfire and make her mad, Tim is challenged to discover an alternative approach to winning her love.

In Coimbatore, Kannan (Vijay) is a mama’s boy, a well-off young man indulged by his mother, Lakshmi (Srividya), a woman immune to patriarchal norms. His irresponsible extravagance gets them into hot water when he invites all of them on a trip for his birthday, which Manimegalai (Dimple) refuses, wanting to have her freedom. Kannan eventually throws a college function and makes arrangements to invite Manimegalai, who declines the invite because of Kannan’s sordid reputation. Although he tries to court her by providing aid to her village, a road to it and resolving including build their plumbing problems, her opinion doesn’t change. She files a complaint against him for misbehaviour, causing Kannan's father to confront him about his actions.

After discovering that he is, in fact, an abandoned orphan, Kannan’s fortunes change. Manimegalai relocates to Ooty and finds employment under a wealthy businessman, Raja (Karan). Kannan, wishing only to make amends, pursues her but is thwarted at each turn as Manimegalai attempts to prevent him from getting near her. When a bureaucratic blunder results in Kannan’s dismissal from his job in an unceremonious, ridiculous scene, Manimegalai nearly takes her own life but is rescued. Kannan’s new journey ultimately causes him to donate his fortune to orphanages. When the time comes and fate forces Manimegalai to recognize her feelings for Kannan, it is Raja who unexpectedly helps a reunion take place, and that’s all you need to know.

“Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen” is a 1997 Tamil romantic drama that explores themes of love, change and salvation. Shot through a methodically acute, social justice lens, it’s a story that captures the fall from hubris to humility. The emotional through-line is unflagging, with peaks of conflict and self-examination, subverted expectations, and finally cathartic resolution. Straddling kinetic sentimentality and moral awakening, the film does what so few family films manage to do and not only avoids being terrible, but serves as a sincere, super memorable story about second chances and the long-term persistence of love.
