“Kaathala Kaathala” (1998), directed by Singeetam, is a full-fledged rom-com starring Kamal Haasan, Prabhu Deva, Rambha and Soundarya. The movie centres on the madcap misadventures of Ramalingam and his friend Sundaralingam, two buddhas who are always scheming for easy money. Their fun-filled bachelor escapades take a disorderly detour as each develops a serious crush on the others’ daughter and will stop at nothing to impress the girls’ families, resulting in countless hilarious and unforeseen obstacles.
Ramalingam and Sundaralingam, orphans, take in other orphaned children. While Sundaralingam finds his way to creating and supporting art, Ramalingam makes his money through illicit means. Featured prominently is his time working for a scam preacher, which he comes to resent. Sundari, an arts college student, has a crush on Ramalingam, but her best friend Janaki is in love with Sundaralingam. Janaki's father, Paramasivam, disapproves of their relationship due to Sundaralingam's poverty, leading to a secret marriage facilitated by friends.
When Janaki tells her father a fib that she’s given birth to a son, it softens his heart. Sundari manipulates her father into believing that Ramalingam is wealthy, and Janaki lies to convince Sundaralingam that she is wealthy. Soon, though, they find they are living in such a way that their own mistaken identities spark comic chaos in their new Bungalow. Janaki and Ramalingam introduce Sundari as their maid and Sundaralingam as the cook, while a beggar's child plays the role of a milk supplier.
As the scope of challenges deepens, especially from Janaki’s uncle, the couples are forced to embroider more and more lies. After almost losing Ramalingam, Sundari confesses to the truth and with help from the police, Ramalingam is cleared of suspicion, and the couples win their families’ approval.
“Kaathala Kaathala”, a rollicking madcap rom-com with loads of misunderstandings, mistaken identities, laugh out loud moments and more, an explosive, witty plot. Focused on two friends caught up in a complex tapestry of deception to win over their girlfriends’ families, the film serves up move-the-plot-forward laughs, mixed in with emphasis on the journey and ideas of love, friendship, and acceptance.
