“Kannukkul Nilavu” is a psychological thriller romantic film directed by Fazil. In addition to Vijay, it features Shalini, Kaveri and Raghuvaran. It's a very good one of the memorable films of Vijay and Shalini, Gautham, a man suffering from a neurological disorder travels to Pondicherry to find his wife Gayathri. Along the way, he meets Hema, a warm-hearted woman who learns about his disease and decides to help him on his adventure to find healing and himself.
The story starts in the year 1985 with Gautham Prabhakar looking for his girlfriend Gayathri in Pondicherry. Because he is no longer aware of the life they’ve prioritized saving, his only hope is to enlist the aid of a small band of friends led by Hema, a party that at first refuses his pleas, but comes to realize he might be suffering from a neurological condition that’s led to his amnesia, so they agree to help him. Hema's father, Dr. Rajashekar, discovers the dangers of Gautham's psychological state.
Through flashbacks, we are transported to the life of Gautham, a musicologist. Six months earlier, while filming in Tamil Nadu, he met the three men responsible for harassing Gayathri. When she was attacked, Gautham tried to rescue her, resulting in a brutal encounter that left him injured and unconscious. In his troubled mind, Gautham thinks Gayathri has been killed and vows to take her murderers’ lives. Rajashekar explains Gautham's fixation on Gayathri was not based on a real relationship but rather a misguided sense of duty.
As they await the arrival of Gautham’s mother from Malaysia, Hema’s nurturing of Gautham leads to a shared sense of attachment. Once his mother is brought in, Gautham’s memories flood back, turning him into a murderous, revengeful spirit. Hema and Rajashekar manage to revive him, and it’s eventually revealed that Gayathri is alive and the men are innocent. Gautham faces the truth, admits remorse for his behaviour, and leaves with Hema and his mother, considering their life ahead as a group.
Widely celebrated as an emotionally gripping psychological thriller, “Kannukkul Nilavu” is a thoughtful examination of memory, trauma, and healing. Fusing romance with thriller elements, the film provides a complex depiction of mental illness and seeking redemption. Escapism in its own right, its compelling narrative and emotional depth combined with engaging performances and production provide a lasting impression. One that will rank it as one of the most memorable experiences for lovers of character-driven drama.
