Kapil Returns

"Kapil Returns" (2023) is a Tamil-language sports drama movie directed and produced by Srini Soundarajan. The movie stars Dr. Srini Soundarajan, Nimisha, Bharath, and Riyaz Khan.

The movie revolves around "Ashok" (Srini), a simple IT employee, his wife "Meera", and his son "Bharath". Bharath has a dream to become a cricketer, especially a good bowler, but his dad encourages him towards a secure engineering profession. Bharath gets little support from his home.

One day, Ashok is suddenly addressed as "Kapil" by a stranger, which leads to some strange behavior that his family is unable to understand. Meera feels something beneath the surface and starts to dig out the truth. As the past starts unraveling, it shows Ashok's failed cricketing ambitions and a life-defining incident that made him abandon the sport. The focus then shifts to how this revelation makes Ashok relook at life and provide an unplanned second chance to his lost passion.

Srini performs well as an actor, portraying Ashok's emotional transformation convincingly. Riyaz Khan portrays Prakash, the country selector, who dislikes Ashok and tries to discourage him. The reference to Stephen Hawking is made in a witty mention of him as a symbol of perseverance and lends a deeper significance to Ashok's journey.

The movie unfolds slowly during the first hour, but after the momentous twist, the second half becomes gripping. The momentum of things untwist smoothly and brings genuine emotion to the audience. "Kapil Returns" gives a positive spin to inspiration, second chances, passion, and perseverance, although the plot is a clichéd sports drama.
