"Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban" (2020) by RDM is a hard-hitting Tamil crime thriller that lays bare the seedy dark underbelly of custodial torture and abuse of authority. The film is a tragic tale of Prabhu (Suresh Ravi), a middle-class, decent delivery executive whose fortunes take a downhill turn when he tries to file a complaint with the police when his wife, Indhu (Raveena Ravi), is mugged and raped. His efforts at seeking justice are rewarded by bureaucratic callousness and brutal recklessness by the police.

Prabhu, on a visit to the police station for obtaining No Objection Certificate (NOC) for his passport, is compelled to make a false affidavit. He complains, crosses out the falsehood, and leaves. This incites the ire of the corrupt Inspector Kannabiran (played by RJ Munna with evil impact), who warns Prabhu that no NOC will be issued without his sign-off and that his approval carries a price tag. When Prabhu lashes back and slaps the inspector in a shouting match, he arrests himself, gets beaten up mercilessly, and sent to another station out of sight.

As Prabhu disappears into the maze of the system, his wife searches for him desperately and is met with evasive and violent responses by the authorities. Prabhu himself suffers relentless physical and psychological brutality. The film documented with utmost sensitivity the gradual destruction of a man's dignity, helplessness in the face of violence of institutions, and the absence of sensibility in those who are entrusted with the job of upholding the law.

"Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban" is a dark, intense representation of how clean power can obliterate regular existence. Director RDM has weaved a compact, engaging plot that unsettles the viewer with its plausibility. The violence may not be explicit, but emotional tension is unrelenting. The movie manages to hold up the mirror to institutionalized corruption and issues a warning that lingers long after the credits roll.
