Kumkuma Rakshe

Kumkuma Rakshe (1977) is a medical mystery thriller by director S. K. A. Chari. Features Manjula, Ashok, Rajinikanth and Leelavathi. The film is about Dr. Murali, a brilliant oncologist who uncovers a conspiracy behind a series of patient deaths, including that of Vikram, the husband of his former love, Trisha. Dr. Murali is a kind and talented cancer specialist. Years ago, he and Trisha were deeply in love, but due to family pressure, she was forced to marry another man, Vikram. Heartbroken, Murali focused on his career and became a respected doctor. Years later, Vikram is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Trisha brings him to the best cancer hospital, where she is shocked to find that Murali is the lead doctor. The three must face their painful past as they deal with Vikram’s serious illness. Murali stays professional and tries his best to save Vikram.

Vikram, feeling the bond between his wife and the doctor, felt it was right to quietly speak to Murali. He told Murali he appreciated everything, and he could not be happier knowing his wife would be looked after, no matter what. After a few weeks of treatment, Vikram was coming out of his fugue state. The relief felt by Trish was palpable, and Murali was proud to have this charge and he was quaking in unbridled determination. But it would not be long before Murali's heart, worn from the mental hurdles it was tackling, would collapse from the burdening heart attack brought on by stress. He passed away peacefully, knowing he had given it and its power all he had. It was fortunate for Vikram. It was fortunate for Trisha, and then suddenly, it was fortunate for all of us as Trisha and Vikram started a cancer care foundation in his name, in recognition of the man who saved a life and lost his.

Kumkuma Rakshe excels by giving the audience a tense and layered story that is as much suspense as human drama. The film builds an atmosphere of intensity that captivates the viewer, from the film's emotional realms, contrived with a mystery. The pacing is perfect, allowing for the contents of the film to unfold in its sweet time, to unveil hidden "truths" and to allow for interpretational extremes of trust and sacrifice to play out. There is an enormous amount of thought in Kumkuma Rakshe, whose storytelling leaves plenty of room for readers to contemplate, long after the credits roll.
