“Kurangu Pedal” is a 2024 Tamil drama film directed and written by Kamalakannan and produced by Sivakarthikeyan Production. The film is set in the 1980s and addresses childhood innocence, dreams, and father-son love via a plain but beautiful plot.
In the tranquil village of Katheri in Salem, a group of children want to learn to ride a cycle during their holidays. For them, owning or riding a cycle is a matter of pride. But cycles are not available in abundance, and they have no option but to rent one from a nearby shop run by a strict man, “Military” (Prasanna). Among them, “Mariappan” (Santhosh Velmurugan) is the most stubborn.
Mariappan's dad, “Kandhasamy” (Kaali Venkat), is a working-class man who ironically never got a chance to ride a bicycle in his life. When the truth about his son's secret comes out, a conflict ensues, generating misunderstandings and emotional tensions. It is a heart-warming journey of innocence, perseverance, and a child's unspoken desire to please his father.
Even if the premise of the film is predictable, Kamalakannan's direction brings forth real nostalgia and tenderness. The film never loses sight of the innocence of children and makes even the simplest scenes look relevant and emotional. One of the most emotional sequences is when Mariappan sleeps over at his sister's residence without comprehending the problems he will face for not returning the cycle in time.
Finished "kurangu pedal" leaves us that it is not only learning how to pedal a bicycle, but it is the process of growing up, heal form your wounds and growing in love a father shit. All the flat storytelling, tender moments stick with you in this one: don't miss it if you are a fan of period piece heartwarmers.
Most notably Kaali Venkat and Santhosh Velmurugan are good in the supporting performances, keeping them subdued yet effective. You really only need that father-son dynamics are anchored well enough which thankfully they are, the emotional core of the movie.
