Subha Sankalpam, directed by K. Viswanath, is a romantic Telugu cinema classic from 1995. It stars Kamal Haasan, Priya Raman and Aamani in the lead roles. In one of the most renowned instalments of Japan’s second golden age of animation, the movie centres on a young fisherman who is nearly killed while protecting his master’s wealth. In the process, he loses his family. Touched by his loyalty and self-sacrifice, the master takes the fisherman’s son as an adopted son and leaves most of his fortune to him.

The film tells the story of a fishing lord named Rayudu (K. Viswanath), who generously shares his wealth with the workers at his fishing farm. Dasu (Kamal), a local fisherman, loves Ganga (Aamani), a carpenter, and Rayudu arranges their marriage. However, Rayudu's son is troubled and influenced by a man named Kota. Fearing for his son’s future, Rayudu gives a significant cash box, intended for building a colony for fishermen, to Dasu. Meanwhile, Rayudu's son falls into more debt, and his associates plan to steal the money from Dasu.

During this chaos, Ganga and Nirmala are badly injured, and Rayudu suffers a heart attack upon learning the news. Ganga and Nirmala die, but Dasu keeps this a secret from the villagers. When the new colony is completed, Rayudu wants Dasu and Ganga to lead the ceremony. In a touching moment, Dasu performs a ritual with Ganga’s ashes, which shocks everyone. Rayudu's granddaughter, Sandhya, loves Dasu but does not marry him, tending to his son until he is seven, while Dasu continues to run the fishing farm.

With intense performances from its lead cast, Subha Sankalpam is a heartbreaking underdog story that paints a stunning portrait of loyalty, sacrifice, and human dignity.
