“Kuselan” (2008), a Tamil-language comedy-drama directed by P. Vasu, starring Rajinikanth, Meena, Pasupathy, Vineetha. It’s about two childhood best friends, one an unassuming barber, the other a global superstar, who find themselves with a shot at an unexpected reunion after years apart.

Balakrishnan is an Upper Primary Village Barber of Marayoor Panchayat, lives with his wife Sridevi and three children. He barely makes enough to scrape by, particularly with paying the girls school fees, the increasing competition from a new high-tech competitor, Shanmugam. One morning the village wakes up with the happy news that none other than the mega star Ashok Kumar would be visiting their village to shoot for a film. Balakrishnan secretly remembers that Ashok was his childhood best friend and wants to meet him, but fears rejection and does not go. As the village hopes Balakrishnan will come to know Ashok, his quietness begins to cast suspicion. In the meantime, Shanmugam stages a photo-op with Ashok to steal the limelight and the villagers begin to deride Balakrishnan, even making his kids disbelieve him.

At a public school function, Ashok Kumar astounds all in attendance by proclaiming Balakrishnan as his best friend in front of a national audience. In this poignant Connecting Memories reminiscence, he fondly recalls their fellowship and details how Balakrishnan helped him through his trying early years. Ashok really wants to meet him but Balakrishnan dodges the appointment in a fit of modesty. Little by little, as they physically grow accustomed to their new environments, they emotionally reunite. Ashok wants to fly Balakrishnan’s family to Chennai and care for them, but Balakrishnan gracefully refuses, opting to remain in the village. Ashok’s last act before departing is to name Balakrishnan as his eternal companion in front of the whole village, to which Ashok beams with pride.

“Kuselan” is a moving story of loyalty, honor, and the power of the sentimental over the star. Pasupathy is excellent as the well meaning but naive barber, and it’s a good reminder of what makes Rajinikanth so effective in his extended cameo, loads of charm and sentiment. The movie balances fun comedic moments with emotional beats and ultimately concludes with a touching reminder about humility, loyalty, and what real friendship means.
