“Lover” is a Tamil romantic drama directed by Prabhuram Vyas and starring Manikandan and Sri Gouri Priya. It deals with issues of love, personal development, and abusive relationships.
“Arun”, a drunk and jobless designer, is hopelessly in love with “Divya”. Their six-year relationship is marked by constant rounds of quarrels, trauma, and make-ups. Divya, a self-sufficient woman with aspirations of her own, starts feeling choked by Arun's possessiveness. As she progresses in life, Arun grapples with his dysfunctional family, business setbacks, and personal insecurities.
As a new team leader, “Madan”, arrives in Divya's life, Arun's jealousy and destructive tendencies worsen. Their love reaches a crisis point when the two of them are caught up in deception. Arun's mother also attempts suicide, deepening him in an emotional trauma. On a visit to Gokarna, Divya reveals to him that his love stems from self-hatred and fear and not companionship. This realization compels Arun to introspect and realize that he must transform for himself instead of holding on to a dysfunctional relationship.
With time, Arun quits alcohol, works on himself, and focuses on his dreams. Two years go by, and he successfully owns a designer cafe. When he encounters Divya once again, he is changed, but their old connection still lingers.
The film gives a realistic and gritty depiction of modern-day relationships, showing how love is not always enough. Manikandan delivers a genuine performance, and “Lover” turns out to be an engaging emotional drama of self-realization and transformation.
