“Maamannan” is a 2023 Tamil political drama directed and written by Mari Selvaraj and produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin under the Red Giant Movies label. The movie has strong performances from Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, and Keerthy Suresh in leading roles.

“Maamannan” (Vadivelu) is an older politician belonging to the Dalit community who has climbed up the ranks of the SSMK party and is now an MLA in Salem, Tamil Nadu. His son, Athiveeran, also called “Veera” (Udhayanidhi Stalin), is a martial arts coach who has a tense relationship with his father as a result of a childhood caste-based traumatic event. Veera, however, is passionately involved in grassroots activities along with his friends and “Leela” (Keerthy Suresh), who operates a free coaching center for poor students.

The storyline takes a twist when “Rathnavelu” (Fahadh Faasil), district secretary of the same party and member of a dominating caste, finds Veera's growing domination as a threat. Rathnavelu's need to dominate and feel superior to others leads to violent clashes like the setting of Leela's coaching institute ablaze. When Veera retaliates, things escalate. There is a peace conference bringing both sides together that turns violent when Rathnavelu assaults Veera and it leads to a public and political outcry.

Finding Maamannan's political rise unbearable, Rathnavelu goes against the ruling party and joins the opposition party to counter Maamannan in the elections. His efforts to turn public sympathy and caste differences against Maamannan fail as Maamannan achieves a landslide victory and is made Speaker of the Assembly.

“Maamannan” is a politically bold drama that defies caste hierarchies and power politics. Vadivelu's performance is touching, and Fahadh Faasil shines as the villain. Although the film is gripping and message-oriented, it is rooted in emotion, and thus it is both engaging and effective.
