Kathiresan is the son of Parvathi, a maid, and his father is a cattle herder. After a fight over gambling debts, his father kills a man and is sent to jail for life. Kathiresan’s classmate Ravi, the Panchayat president’s son, bullies him because he is jealous of Kathiresan’s good grades. The Panchayat president wants Kathiresan to quit school and become a herder, but Parvathi moves to the city to give her son a better future. Kathiresan works as a rickshaw puller to pay for school and studies hard. He falls in love with Shanthi, the judge's daughter, while he is in college. He does very well on his exams and becomes a college teacher while studying for the IAS exams.

Meanwhile, Ravi, who is troublemaking, is expelled. Out of revenge, Ravi kills a student and frames Kathiresan. However, the truth comes out, and Ravi is sentenced to life in jail, the same prison as Kathiresan’s father. Kathiresan becomes an IAS officer and later visits the jail. His father is free and proud of his son. Ravi's dad tries to hurt Kathiresan, but Kathiresan saves him, and the two families are finally able to get back together in peace.
