“Mahaan” is a 2022 Tamil-language neo-noir action thriller film written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, featuring Vikram and Dhruv Vikram in authoritative lead performances. The movie explores the life of Gandhi Mahaan (Vikram), a teacher of commerce who betrays the Gandhian values he was brought up on and becomes a liquor tycoon. But his ascension is at a heavy price; his wife, Nachi (Simran), deserts him, and their son, Dadabhai Naoroji, aka Dada (Dhruv Vikram), leaves with her.
Encouraged by an old student and reunited with childhood friend Sathya, Gandhi enters the liquor trade and eventually builds a massive empire with their brand “Sooraa.” Over the years, they grow from small-time sellers to influential liquor syndicate leaders, facing political manipulation, betrayal, and internal conflicts. Gandhi's moral compass degrades as he allows violence, corruption, and manipulation to power his success.
Years down the line, Gandhi's grown-up son Dada, who has turned into an IPS officer and a die-hard Gandhian, comes back to destroy the very liquor mafia he himself established.Dada's acts of retaliation included the strategic assassination of Gandhi's trusted confidants, including his school friends. This leads to a fierce and ruthless battle between the father and son. Gandhi is torn between his son's aspiration and preserving his heritage.
Dada playing situations to force Gandhi to murder his closest friend Sathya is shown in the theatrical climactic turn. The emotional resolution has Gandhi turning within himself, relinquishing his kingdom, and imprisoning Dada, not as punishment, but to teach him balance and personal liberty.
“Mahaan” is an urbane, intense, and philosophical action-drama about identity, morality, and rebellion. Vikram gives a magnetic performance, and Dhruv lends sharp intensity. Karthik Subbaraj weaves action with a rich emotional undertone, supported by a gripping score and dramatic visuals. “Mahaan” is an unflinching investigation into the choices one makes and the price one pays for living against or living within ethics.
