“Manam Kothi Paravai” (2012) This Tamil-language romantic comedy was directed and written by S. Ezhil, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Athmeeya. This Ilaiyaraaja-composed, romantic musical drama tracks a light-hearted young man, Kannan, who’s besotted by his childhood friend Revathy. Things go off the rails fast when his friends kidnap her to prevent her from going through with her arranged marriage, only to discover she might not want to marry the prince either.

Kannan is a carefree young man, who assists his father Ramaiah, a mason by profession, with the construction work. He grows up with constant bullying from his friends, hiding his true feelings about friends, when he falls secretly in love with his neighbour Revathy, a headstrong daughter from a notorious family of ruffians. Just when Kannan works up the nerve to let her know he’s smitten too, Revathy’s family gets her married off to an important politician. To get the wedding cancelled, Kannan’s friends from Mumbai kidnap Revathy. The plan backfires when her surprise guest announces that she doesn’t love Kannan. Later, she confesses to him that indeed she does love him but conceals it in order to keep him safe from her lethal family. Things take a dark turn when Revathy’s family catches up with Kannan and his friends, forcing their shocking separation.

Two years later, having spent that time working in Oman as a security engineer, Kannan returns home to Kerala and meets Revathy once again. When they finally reunite, the moment is emotionally charged, as Kannan realizes, that now that she remains unmarried, they can possibly be together. Revathy is terrified of her father’s reaction and begs Kannan to go away. Just then her father shows up, uninvited. Rather than plan revenge, he blindsides them by asking Kannan to move out of the house and take Revathy with him.

“Manam Kothi Paravai” is a charming love story with humour and emotional depth. Sivakarthikeyan shines with his comedic and genuine performance, while Athmeeya portrays a strong-willed girl torn between love and family. The film celebrates love, friendship, and hope.
