“Matka” is a 2024 period action thriller directed and written by Karuna Kumar and produced by Vijender Reddy Teegala and Rajani Talluri. The movie features Varun Tej, Meenakshi Chaudhary, and Nora Fatehi and is based on true events. It is about how an ordinary man becomes successful in the risky business of gambling.
Located in Visakhapatnam from 1958 to 1982, the film focuses on “Vasu” (Varun Tej), a refugee youth barely managing to survive. As he is compelled to lead a life of poverty, he comes to know of the secret underground game of Matka, a place where destiny turns overnight. The temptation of wealth and power for him leads him into it as a part-time player but soon teaches him the ways of the game. His sharp mind and fearless attitude help him climb the ranks, transforming him from a common gambler into a powerful underworld figure.
With Vasu emerging on the rise come his challengers. With success comes exposing himself to other gangs, crooked bureaucrats, and the authorities. In conjunction with this, he battles within himself, allowing ambition to square off against integrity. His wife “Sujatha” (Meenakshi Chaudhary) keeps a tight grip of his hand as she tries to anchor him back to what is important to him, while “Sofia” (Nora Fatehi), an enigmatic old acquaintance, causes trouble in his already treacherous life.
As he takes each step, Vasu's life is a risk in which every wrong step will cause him to lose all that he has. Having his life at stake as he struggles to live in a world riddled with deceit and betrayal, he is compelled to choose if power will be worth the cost he is paying.
"Matka" is a pleasingly visually driven film that brings alive the vibrant essence of 1960s-80s Visakhapatnam. Varun Tej delivers a chilling performance, bringing Vasu's transformation alive with depth and intensity. The period setting of the film, intriguing storyline, and powerful performances make it a must-watch for fans of action-filled thrillers.
