"Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum" (2016) is a Tamil fantasy comedy film directed and scripted by Amudheshwar. The film stars Prabhu, Kalidas Jayaram, and Ashna Zaveri, with Kamal Haasan in a special appearance. The film playfully exposes the emotional bond between a father and son, blending enjoyment, fantasy, and emotional moments.
Annamalai (Prabhu) is an unassuming single parent owning an Indian restaurant in Malaysia and raising his son Karthik (Kalidas Jayaram) with care and compassion. Karthik, however, is a free spirit who thinks his father is indulgent towards him. He is infatuated with his college friend Pavithra (Ashna Zaveri), the daughter of divorced parents. Mala (Pooja Kumar), a daring don, in the meantime falls in love with Annamalai, awed by his cooking abilities and modesty. Annamalai is overlooked by Karthik, who cares more about friends than relatives. Their lives take a miraculous turn when a saint named Swami (Kamal Haasan) swaps their souls to teach them a lesson. Annamalai is now residing in Karthik's body and attending college, while Karthik, in his father's body, manages the restaurant.
By this twist of fate, Annamalai discovers Karthik's love for Pavithra and reunites her family. Karthik, meanwhile, learns about the hardships his father endured to raise him after his mother's death. He begins to appreciate his father's sacrifices and even sanctions Mala's love for Annamalai. The problem begins when Mala's boss, a don, dislikes her romance with Annamalai and kidnaps Mala along with Pavithra. Finally, there is a side-splitting rescue mission, and all's well that ends well. Karthik and Annamalai realize the value of each other, and their souls find their way back to their respective bodies. Karthik marries Pavithra finally, and Annamalai and Mala find each other.
"Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum" is a fantasy film light-hearted in nature. Prabhu and Kalidas deliver good performances, and Kamal Haasan's appearance is a welcome surprise. Combining humour, sentiment, and a fantasy switch of souls, the film gently reminds people about the need for love and tolerance among families.
