“Minsara Kanna” (1999) directed by K. S. Ravikumar is a romantic comedy film, starring Vijay, Khushbu and Rambha. The film follows Indira, a woman with a deep mistrust of men who exclusively hire women in both her business and home. Her carefully controlled world begins to shift when Kasi joins as her driver, and gradually, members of his entire family become part of her household, leading to unexpected changes.

Indira Devi, a businesswoman in Ooty, hates men for the tragedy that turned her world upside down, was a man once. Running a successful woman’s clothing enterprise, with the support of her assistant Priya, she provides for her family. Indira is met with permanent sabotage by the mighty Vedachalam, her fictional rival businessman. At the same time, a young man named Kasi, on the run from the local police, ends up at Indira’s doorstep and joins her in her fight against Vedachalam’s goons. Indira subverts tradition when she unexpectedly hires Kasi to be her driver, shocking her all-female staff.

Indira’s sister, Ishwarya, who just moved to Germany, comes home and clashes with Kasi, while both Ishwarya and Priya fall in love with him. Vedachalam has plans to marry his daughter to Indira’s son Ashok, hoping to wed his way into her family’s fortune. Kasi, whose real name is Kannan, wins Indira’s trust and is elevated, prompting Indira to open her heart and mind to men. The film’s central romantic narrative then unfolds, culminating in tragic revelations about the truth of Kannan’s family and a dramatic revelation of this fact, concluding with siblings separated by tragedy joyously reconnecting and reconciling.

A delightful blend of romance, comedy and family drama, “Minsara Kanna” approaches issues of trust, change and community with a seeming effortless sincerity. As miscommunications blossom into awareness-expanding realizations, they provide an unexpectedly fulfilling mix of humour and pathos, making for an adorable charmer that little be called anything other than delightful victory love and acceptance can defeat even the deepest-seated hate.
