“Mounam Pesiyadhe” (2002) by Ameer is an iconic love story in Kollywood. It stars Suriya, Nandaa and Trisha. The film revolves around Gautham, a restaurant owner who is in love with Sandhya who is the cousin of his friend Kannan. Friendship must compete with love when Gautham finds out the same thing Kannan’s parents have arranged: that Kannan will marry Sandhya.

Gautham and Kannan are childhood friends, with Gautham owning a restaurant and Kannan a sales executive. Kannan is in love with Mahalakshmi “Maha,” but he is terrified of his domineering father, preventing him from telling Maha how he feels. He makes Gautham promise to tell Sandhya, a cousin, that Arjun loves Maha. Gautham agrees, but Sandhya reveals she is not interested in marriage either and prefers Gautham instead, leaving him shocked and confused.

When Kannan’s and Sandhya’s families find out that neither youth is interested in marrying, they call off the wedding plans. Gautham starts to fall for Sandhya after getting phone calls and presents he believes are from her. However, when he meets Sandhya at a restaurant, he discovers she is in love with someone named Aravind. When Maha’s father discovers her love for Kannan, he brutishly sends goons to assault Kannan, which angers Gautham. When Kannan goes to complain, Maha’s father apologizes profusely, and Kannan and Maha’s wedding plans are back on. On his wedding day, Gautham comes to the decision that his one true love is his college friend who’s always loved him, and there has only ever been one girl for him. The movie ends with them riding off hand in hand.

“Mounam Pesiyadhe” is an achingly beautiful romantic drama that sensitively examines the intricacies of friendship, love, and emotional struggle. One of the film’s saving graces, apart from the innate melodrama of its material, is the sincere and deeply felt performances from Suriya, Nandaa and Trisha who beautifully charge their complicated characters with emotional complexity and honest conviction. Through their unique chemistry and nuanced performances, their intimate story is relatable yet exciting and fulfilling, making for a uniquely heartfelt experience for any fan of romantic cinema.
