“Mugavaree” (2000) is a romantic drama film directed by V. Z. Durai. It stars Ajith Kumar, Jyothika and Raghuvaran. That’s the story of Sridhar, a struggling music director who’s given decades to trying to make it big. During his journey, he finds love, but his single-minded quest for success makes him feel like he needs to put his new relationship on pause, creating a constant struggle between the drive for success and the desire for personal fulfilment.

Sridhar comes from a middle-class family and aspires to be a music composer after graduating. Despite trying for eight years to find work in movies, he has no success, but his family supports him. Around this time, Sridhar meets and develops a romance with Viji Chandrasekhar. Although Sridhar plans to marry Viji after his first music break, he remains focused on his ambition.

Sridhar’s big break comes when he’s hired to score a film, only for his exciting new project to be scrapped when the film’s producer dies in an accident. Back home, Viji’s family members are worried that her unmarried status will hurt her sister’s marriage prospects. Viji’s father proposes that Sridhar marry Viji and hires Sridhar to work for him, but Sridhar will not give up on his dream. After his brother Shiva suffers a heart attack, the family decides to work together to earn money.

Sridhar makes the difficult decision to take a job to support his family financially, foregoing his dreams. After much struggle over a few years, he finally wins an opportunity to set music to a song, achieves success and beds Viji.

“Mugavaree” is a poignant journey into ambition, sacrifice, and the price paid to pursue a dream. Wise’s film sensitively captures the vexation of classic personal passion versus family responsibility, doing real justice to the crucible of perseverance when confronted by the death of a dream on multiple occasions. Its emotional honesty, richly drawn characters, and authentic depiction of middle-class dreams and disappointments render it a beautiful and universal experience for anyone who’s ever faced a choice between love and their passions.
