“Nala Damayanthi” (2003), is a comedy film by Mouli. Features Kamal Haasan, R. Madhavan and Geetu Mohandas. The film is about Ramji, a simple village cook, arrives in Australia only to discover that his prospective employer has died unexpectedly. Struggling to survive and without proper documentation, he starts working illegally at an Indian restaurant. To avoid deportation and resolve his legal troubles, he comes up with a plan to marry a local woman, setting the stage for a series of humorous and heartfelt events.
Ramji Narayanaswami Iyer, a Tamil Brahmin cook, wishes to marry his sister, Bhagyam, off well as they are orphans. He has dowry obligations to pay but no cash.The groom’s family is impressed by his cooking and hires him to work in Melbourne, sending their daughter a share of his salary as dowry. After they arrive, the millionaire dies, leaving Ramji unemployed and stranded with no passport.
To make enough money, he works illegally in a Dilliwaala Indian Hotel but requires a legal work permit. Ivan, an immigration lawyer, proposes that he marry an Australian citizen, so Ramji enters into agreement for a sham marriage with Damayanthi, a Sri Lankan Tamil Christian. They get married in a hurry, and Ramji takes the name Robert. Since the cops think their marriage is a sham, they need to keep up the ruse and stay married enough to not get discovered.
As time passes, Damayanthi and Ramji begin to connect with one another through food. As Ramji tries to make dowry payments for his sister, Damayanthi uses her wits to keep the family afloat. Ramji must return to India to be reunited with his parents, but Damayanthi tracks him down and brings him back home, where the two open a restaurant together, welcomed by none other than Kamal Haasan and Jayaram.
