“Paarthale Paravasam” (2001), directed by K. Balachander, is a quiet drama that contemplates the pain following the divorce. The main narrative track focuses on the dedicated doctor Dr. Madhav, who’s forced into fame as a movie star despite his wishes. Madhav stays grounded and continues on his intended path, one as a real doctor who heals and cares for people, not the glitz of the film industry.
Madhava, a doctor with past aspirations of film and acting, earns himself some notoriety, but ultimately chooses to return to the field of medicine and serving society, fulfilling a promise made to his dead father. Having married Simi, yet his previous love affair and son resulting from an illicit affair with a college pier in the States creates ruckus. Simi divorces Madhava, but they separate as friends and continue to work together, assisting each other in finding other partners.
As Simi tries to set up Madhava’s marriage to Chella, a nurse, Madhava gets Simi to agree to marry Azhagu, a stage dancer. To win Azhagu’s father’s approval, Madhava promises to donate land for a hospital to be built. Their weddings are fixed on the same day. Azhagu eventually marries a cousin sister instead. Azhagu’s parents stop Madhava’s wedding when they get to know about his history. Eventually, Madhava and Simi remarried, and Chella gets married to Kumaran, Madhava’s coworker.
With an astonishing performance by lead actor Kalidas Jayaram, “Paarthale Paravasam,” a pure, unadulterated drama examines the stifling limits of singular ambitions against family duties. It’s a fierce reimagining of this savage, legendary tale that invites us to consider the shape of twisted love, the nature of torture and forgiveness, the cost of sacrifice and redemption. With cinematic imagination, the film tells a story about the difficulty of keeping promises and the joy of renewed possibilities, contrasting fantasy and reality, romance and emotional depth, to create a passionate chronicle of the value of staying true to your promises and finding hope beyond the chaos of existence.
