"Pancharaaksharam" is a Tamil supernatural thriller from 2019, directed by Balaji Vairamuthu in his directorial debut. Santhosh Prathap, Gokul Anand, Ashwin Jerome, Madhu Shalini, and Sana Althaf feature in it.
The film starts with an animated sequence in the 11th-century Chola era, where a saint writes a cryptic book named Pancharaaksharam. The book has future predictions, and its prophecies always materialize. A king is a keen follower of the book's predictions, but when it predicts his death in war, he ignores it. But the prophecy materializes, his kingdom is lost, and the book is pronounced cursed before it vanishes from records.
Today, five strangers Dishyanth, Sameera, Dharna, Jeevika, and Aidhan; cross paths at a concert and become instant buddies. They plan a trip together, and while at a library, Sameera stumbles upon an old book and proposes that they play a game. Unbeknownst to them, they have discovered the cursed book of centuries past. They all read out a prophecy about each of them, laughing it off. One by one, however, the predictions begin happening.
Sameera witnesses a paranormal incident at home, Dishyanth is robbed by dacoits while traveling, Aidhan gets electrocuted when playing the guitar, and Dharna has a car accident in a racing incident. The most terrible thing happens to Jeevika, who is abducted by a serial killer who is active on the dark web. The friends all get over their experiences but have trouble locating Jeevika.
From hints in the book, they trace the location of the killer's lair and battle to rescue their friend. They rescue Jeevika and other kidnapped women to safety after a hair-raising battle. To prevent future tragedies, they destroy the cursed book.
As they attempt to move forward, Sameera notices a bluebird, suddenly remembering a lost segment of her prophecy; a bluebird will fly before a still worse calamity occurs. She watches in horror as the movie concludes, foreshadowing an ill-fated future.
"Pancharaaksharam" is a spine-tingling thriller that mixes mystery, suspense, and supernatural horror, making the audience watch with bated breath until the end.
