"Papanasam" (2015) is a Tamil crime thriller movie directed and written by Jeethu Joseph. It features Kamal Haasan, Gautami, and Nivetha Thomas. The film is about an average, movie-crazy man who uses his intelligence and instincts to save his family when a catastrophic accident puts them in serious trouble.

Suyambulingam (Kamal Haasan) is an autodidact who runs a cable TV business in the town of Papanasam. He coexists peacefully with wife Rani (Gautami) and two daughters, Selvi (Nivetha Thomas) and Meena (Esther Anil). Their life turns when their daughter Selvi is secretly recorded in the shower by Inspector General Geetha Prabhakar's son, Varun (Roshan Basheer). Varun blackmails Selvi and later threatens Rani. Selvi, mistakenly killing him, Rani and Selvi dispose of the corpse in a compost pit, and Meena is a witness to all this. Suyambulingam, discovering the truth, secretly plans to protect them. He covers up evidence, creates alibis by arranging a trip for the family, and systematically plans hotel and restaurant outings as evidence.

While Varun is pursued by the police, Geetha discovers Suyambulingam's family fishy and starts an arduous inquiry. The family is questioned, but the alibis prove to be perfect. Geetha learns later that the alibi was created. The family is arrested, and the police turn to brutal methods of getting at the truth. Meena finally reveals the location of the secret body, but it is only a boar carcass that turns up. Suyambulingam had secretly moved the body elsewhere. Public outcry and media pressure later compel the police to recant, and Geetha resigns. The family is legally cleared, and there is normalcy once again.

"Papanasam" is an intense, suspenseful movie with a good script and impeccable performance by Kamal Haasan. The film portrays quite well how a common man will do anything for the benefit of his family. It has a good message and good turns and twists, and holds the viewer until the end.
