Parva: An Epic Tale of Dharma is one of the upcoming movies of the historical-drama genre. This new film’s story breaks away from the epic mythic structures and instead allows a modern and realistic retelling of the Mahabharata for its psychological drama – contained within the human self-reflection.

The action takes place just before the Kurukshetra War, and the four characters, Kunti, Draupadi, Bhima, and Arjuna, sit down to reflect on their lives, relationships, and ultimate decisions. The film’s plot begins in the Madras Court, and from the beginning, it is clear how grave the situation is as they prepare for war. Each of the four characters has their own monologue, and each of them has fully taken on their character. Kunti reckons with her guilt and destiny as a mother; Draupadi manages shame regarding her agency; Bhima grapples with violence and loyalty; and Arjuna is met with duty and remorse.

Those self-narrations strip the glamour off heroism and reveal a very complex, ethically and emotionally conflicted self. Parva chronicles the collapse of the mythic Mahabharata not by flashy, divine intervention, but by a rational disintegration within a chaotic society. Overall, Parva: An Epic Tale of Dharma is one of the upcoming movie releases that has focused on character and empathy amidst the layers of humanity and human failures as well as the tragic impact of war.
