“Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai” is a 2024 Tamil family drama and road movie written and directed by Micheal K. Raja. Starring Vimal, Karunas, and Mery Rickets, the film is an emotional rollercoaster of a ride filled with conflict, survival, and self-discovery.
“Kumar”, a driver of a mortuary van, is assigned to transport the corpse of “Narayana Perumal” from Chennai to Tirunelveli. With his pregnant wife, “Kalaiyazhagi”, due to deliver, leaving her behind, Kumar embarks on a problematic journey. Complications arise when the two conflicting sons of “Perumal, Esakkimuthu and Sankarapandian”, struggle to perform the last rites over their heritage. Kumar, along the journey, picks up Nalinamoorthy, an unsuccessful Koothu artist, who is reluctantly offered a lift. It is a journey fraught with difficulties, from car breakdowns to a surprise ambush on a young couple they hitch a ride with along the way.
The situation goes awry when Kumar is informed of the fact that Kalaiyazhagi must undergo urgent surgery that would cost Rs. 25,000. It comes as yet another surprise that Perumal's dead body is hijacked by unknown thugs. In their wild goose chase to locate the stolen body while family enmity and hypocrisy escalate, a critical juncture arises wherein Kumar must bluff Esakki by making a costume of the deceased out of Nalinamoorthy.
The tension is well established through Kumar's plight, with the dark humor and drama combining quite well. Yet, the complex plot and overdose of subplots water down the emotional punch at times. Although the acting, particularly by Vimal and Karunas, adds texture, the length and speed of the movie make it a tough watch. “Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai” is a blend of raw emotion and shocking occurrences that provides a compelling if lopsided movie experience.
