"Pokkiri Raja" (1982) is a comedy action film directed by S. P. Muthuraman. It stars Rajinikanth, Sridevi, Radhika and Y. G. Mahendran. The film is about Ramesh, who is employed at a factory by a businessman with the intent of uncovering corruption and irregularities. However, Ramesh gets fired, due to personal relations, and then he faces greater troubles when he is wrongly accused of murder after the industry owner dies.

Ramesh is the manager for Paranthaman, an industrialist who thinks his relatives are stealing from him. Ramesh uncovers the truth about the relatives and keeps an eye on the office, which angers Paranthaman's relatives, Venkatachalam and Chandran. Ramesh is initially at odds with Vanaja, who is Paranthaman's daughter, but they eventually fall in love. However, Paranthaman fires Ramesh after discovering he was unfaithful to Vanaja. After Paranthaman is murdered, Ramesh is wrongfully accused when Vanaja testifies against him under duress.

While in prison, Ramesh meets Raja, a convict who looks just like him and has been misidentified by Vanaja. They create a plan to expose the real criminals. Ramesh disguises himself as Raja, and Venkatachalam tries to have him taken back to prison but fails. Ramesh informs Vanaja about Raja's situation and protects her from a forced marriage to Chandran. Ramesh marries Vanaja with his mother's approval. After three days, he returns to prison and switches places with Raja, who then recounts Ramesh's actions to his girlfriend. Chandran and Venkatachalam are later revealed as the murderers of Paranthaman. Ramesh and Raja uncover the truth when they record Chandran and Venkatachalam's confession, which leads to their arrest.

"Pokkiri Raja" packs a wonderful action-comedy in a standard masala film format. The film is well-paced, has hummable music, and wonderful surprises, enabling it to tread the category between humour and drama. The excitement is derived from its dual-role nature, bringing charm and liveliness. Overall, it is a commercial film that has enough emotional weight and the aspects of old Tamil cinema that viewers love.
