“Ponniyin Selvan: II” (2023), directed by Mani Ratnam. Mani Ratnam Co-wrote with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. It was a direct sequel to the previous movie, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 in 2022, and is also a novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy.
The film features Vikram as “Aditha Karikalan”, Karthi as “Vanthiyathevan”, Aishwarya Rai as “Queen Nandini and Mandakini”, Trisha as “Kundavai”, Jayam Ravi as “Arulmozhi Varman”, alias Ponniyin Selvan, and Jayaram as “Azhwarkadiyan Nambi”.
The story continues after “Arulmozhi Varman”, who was considered dead. He reappears in the kingdom of Cholas, and it becomes meaningless for the crown prince Aditha Karikalan to keep the whole kingdom united. Meanwhile, political conspiracy, betrayal, and revenge storylines emerge. However, Nandini is full of malice for Cholas and is geared to bring an end to that dynasty. Having this motive in mind, the film peeps into the early life of Aditha Karikalan with Nandini, where tragic love and betrayal are ignited to form a spark to revenge.
There lies a powerful tale of loyalty and destiny in epic battles and conflicts of the kingdom itself, all being run deep under an emotional arc in “Ponniyin Selvan: II”. Such beautiful visuals combined with strong performances truly bring the golden age of the Chola dynasty into viewers' lives.
