Directed by Vikraman, Pudhiya Mannargal is an action political film from 1994. It features Vikram, Mohini, Sriman and Babu Ganesh. The film follows a group of aimless youth who are suddenly thrust into the world of politics, driven by a desire to improve the dire state of their society and uplift the lives of those around them. Faced with mounting challenges, they must confront powerful forces.

Sathyamoorthy, Vidya, and their four close friends are college students who can’t stand injustice. Disturbed by the political fraud and abuse of power by Chief Minister Tamilmagan, they become increasingly involved in activism. When one of the friends attempts to reveal the CM’s corrupt activities, Tamilmagan has him taken care of by hired thugs. Even though the murder is staged to appear as an accident, Vidya sees what happens and courageously reports it to the police, unwilling to go quiet.

Tragically, on her wedding day, Vidya is attacked by the same group in a horrifying act of public violence meant to silence her permanently. Humiliated and broken, she takes her own life. Shattered by the loss, her friends initially seek violent revenge, but Vidya’s father urges them to fight the system through justice, not chaos. Choosing the democratic path, they enter politics to challenge Tamilmagan directly. With courage and persistence, they expose his corruption to the public, and in a powerful show of youth-led change, they defeat him in the election, proving that the future can be reshaped by those brave enough to stand for truth.

Pudhiya Mannargal is a relevant and inspiring political drama that focuses on the potential of youth and the importance of active citizenship. Richly embedded with emotional context and a narrative directed toward social accountability, the film pushes viewers to think deeply about corruption, justice, and building democracy from the ground up. By exploring and exposing the raw and largely undocumented reality of political party structures, the film calls on the youth of our nation to realise that they can win their party’s leadership through a process of voting internally and ultimately by voting externally to elect the best leaders. With a message about civic engagement and the importance of every single vote, that couldn’t be more timely or relevant, it’s a must-watch for anyone who cares about socially conscious cinema.
