“Rail” is a Tamil drama film written and directed by Bhaskar Sakthi, produced by M. Vediyappan under Discovery Cinemas. The cast includes Kungumaraj Muthusamy, Parvaiz Mahroo, Vairamala, and Ramesh Vaidya.
The film is set in a village on the outskirts of Madurai and revolves around “Muthaiah”, a drunkard electrician whose life is crumbling with the entry of migrant workers who take away jobs from locals. His wife, “Chellama”, is hostile towards him because of his drinking behavior, while their local neighbor “Sunil”, a toiling migrant worker from Mumbai, is an easy victim of Muthaiah's ire. Faulting outsiders for his misfortune, Muthaiah goes further into self-pity thinking that the migrants are the cause of his downfall.
When Sunil is killed in a motorcycle accident, the film darkens. Muthaiah's behavior and attitude drive him to a breaking point, where he must face his own failures. The film tries to show his redemption, but his path is shrouded by his failure to reform.
Even with a strong premise, “Rail” falters in execution. Muthaiah's character is that of a hopeless drunk, but the movie tries to rationalize his failure by placing blame on outside factors. His comeback story is abrupt and unsatisfying, particularly when his family forgives him too readily for his misdeeds. The repetitive backdrop and failure to probe deeper into the migrant crisis render the movie monotonous. While “Rail” attempts to bring forward entitlement and social strife, it ends up being shallow, thus keeping viewers disconnected.
