"Ranuva Veeran" is a Tamil action picture directed by S. P. Muthuraman, released in 1981. The movie starred Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Sridevi and Nalini. The story is about Raghu, a young man who comes back to his village, only to find that everyone there lives in fear of a vicious gang. Things take a turn when Raghu discovers that his sister is in love with the gang's leader.

A thief, known for causing chaos in a village with his gang, is chased by the police but manages to escape. Around the same time, Raghu, a young soldier, returns to his native village, which has long suffered from thefts and murders committed by a mysterious criminal called the "One-Eyed Man." Raghu soon discovers that the thief everyone fears is someone he once knew well, his old college roommate. Their paths had separated years ago, but fate brings them back together in a shocking way.

Raghu also reunites with his strict, Orthodox Iyengar father, who constantly criticises him. He learns that his sister had run away years ago, and it turns out, to his surprise, that she had run away with the thief, the same man now terrorising their village. The thief is also now a father, and his son has had a childhood growing up in crime. In a tragic change of events, with rising tension and the truth revealed, ashamed of his father's criminal life, the thief's son also ends up shooting his father. The story ends in sadness and tragedy, showing how crime not only destroys society but also destroys families from within.

"Ranuva Veeran" provides viewers with a chilling mix of action and emotions, drama and action. Weaker moments in the movie come from family strife made worse by moral dilemmas and tension. Director Muthuraman mixes a craft based on a separation between fun moments and action sequences, showing the fluency of Tamil films. There is indeed a pacing, depth of emotion, potential for entertainment, moral dilemmas and emotional weight to "Ranuva Veeran" that provokes a lot of thought. Plus, it has more than one iconic moment and splendid cinematography that make it particularly memorable.
