“Rocket Driver” is a 2024 Tamil fantasy dramedy film written and directed by Sriram Ananthashankar and produced by Anirudh Vallabh under the Stories by The Shore banner. The film stars Vishvath, Sunaina, and Nagar Vishal in key roles.
The story is about Prabhakaran "Prabha," a young graduate who dreams of becoming a rocket scientist but finds himself driving an auto-rickshaw in Chennai due to financial constraints. Disillusioned with life and resentful towards his father, Prabha is lost. One day, he meets a boy who claims to be time-traveling A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, brought from 1948 to 2023. Prabha refutes the boy's claim initially, but he is left amazed to find that Kalam has arrived on a mission to settle a one-anna debt to his boyhood friend Annachi.
The duo goes to Rameswaram, where Prabha cannot accept Kalam's recollections, and Kalam finds it hard to acknowledge the transformed world. Aggravated by what appears to be a simple assignment, Prabha finally gets a diary in which Kalam expresses his great desire to clear the debt. They trace the descendant of Annachi, Savarimuthu, and save him from taking his own life at the nick of time. Kalam clears the long-pending debt and completes his task.
While saying their goodbyes, the bus Kalam first boarded in 1948 returns, confirming his time traveling. Kalam imparts a very convincing lesson; his time traveling was not to become great but to learn to enjoy life's little, yet important moments. He realizes that Prabha's selfless act of helping a lost boy is as great as any scientific achievement.
Enriched by this experience, Prabha gains a new respect for his father's sacrifices and appreciates the small joys of life. Down-to-earth and focused, he keeps going, accepting the journey and not merely the destination.
“Rocket Driver” is a touching combination of fantasy, humor, and sheer sentiments. The film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in multiple languages.
