“Saala” is a 2024 action crime thriller movie written and directed by SD Manipual. Srinath Alnath, I. T. Arasan, and Aruldoss feature in the movie as it tells a story about a high-level struggle to get a renowned bar reopened in Royapuram, involving gangsters, politicians, and social activists in an interesting struggle.
The plot centers around “Saala” (Dheeran), a man who is extremely devoted and brought up by local gangster “Guna” (Aruldoss). Guna used to own the Parvathy Bar, but following a chain of events, the ownership is something over which he and the cunning “Thangadurai” (Charles Vinoth) come into conflict. Swearing to take back the bar from the man who brought him up, Saala joins the battle, unaware of the greater threats that lie in wait.
In the meantime, “Punitha” (Reshma Venkatesh), a staunch social activist, battles liquor shops close to schools, temples, and hospitals. Her campaign comes into head-on conflict with Saala's quest, at first pitting them against one another. But as Saala observes her selfless commitment, especially towards orphaned children, his own outlook starts to change.
Tensions come to the fore when “Thangadurai” begins to use Saala's shops to sell illicit liquor, pulling him into a crisis that imperils all that he holds dear. Under pressure from increasing interference from authorities, rivals, and internal politics, Saala needs to find where his loyalty lies.
The power struggle with “Saala” provides a compelling test, but character and pacing are worse in this movie. Emotive conflicts aren't believable, and the formulaic twists deprive the narrative of realism. It excels in action and suspense, however, but lacks sticking power regarding social issues to result in a shallow experience.
